Born in Amsterdam's industrial wharflands, Bumper Studio emerged as a rejection of modern, fragile, plastic furniture. We return to the weight of raw materials, treating furniture design as an act of architectural carpentry.
Unlike traditional furniture makers who mask materials with veneers, Bumper Studio highlights structural honesty. Our concrete components are hand-mixed, poured into custom textured timber frameworks, and left to dry in the variable humid air of Amsterdam.
This method preserves unique timber grain markings, concrete flow patterns, and tiny surface voids on each component. No two slabs are identical.
To balance the weight of cold concrete, we employ 800g/m² unbleached heavy canvas, woven on traditional mechanical looms. Our frames use pure steel dowels, tensioning the canvas directly across concrete slabs.
The result is a responsive seating suspension system that adapts physically to the body over time, while keeping a crisp, brutalist architectural line.
Every canvas seam is double-stitched with rot-proof industrial sailmaking thread to prevent any structure distortion, even after years of active daily use.
